WHALEPOWER’S TUBERCLE-ENHANCED ROTOR DEVELOPMENT

WhalePower has done considerable research into tubercle enhanced airfoils. We moved from mathematical analyses and design studies to the development of the world’s first full scale tubercle-enhanced  blades.

REAL WORLD TESTING
Practical retrofit tubercle elements were designed, fabricated and tested for more than 6 months on the blades of a 10-meter 30 kW turbine.

Detailed results are confidential at this time but the performance was outstanding and the overall conclusions are straightforward: Tubercles work. In fact, they work better than even WhalePower insiders could have hoped.

  • They dramatically enhance power at low wind speeds
  • The blades operate more quietly than any previous blades
  • With no stalling at the tip, tip chatter appears to be totally eliminated
  • Performance in real world conditions appears to be more stable and responsive than any turbine in history. When a gust blows through, they accelerate, virtually instantaneously with no noise or other signs of instability.

THIRD PARTY TESTING
Third party tests were conducted at The Wind Energy Institute of Canada in Prince Edward Island between 2007 and 2008. These tests solidified our early mathematical test results and filled in some of the scientific gaps in the studies. The tubercled blades turned out to produce 20% more annualized power than the original Wenvor stock blade.

NEW TESTS ON LARGER TURBINES

WhalePower’s licensee (TEG of Munich, Germany) is retrofitting a large municipally-owned turbine in Germany. Third party tests will commence in 2018.
